Autoflowering vs. Feminized Cannabis Seeds
Choosing the right marijuana seeds can be a big challenge for you, as there are so many varieties to pick from, these days. It will depend on a lot of factors like what you would like to grow or smoke, where you are going to grow them and how much time it would take to harvest the same. When you do a research on purchasing these seeds, you would have realised that apart from the regular seeds that are grown from a male and female plant, there are two newer types of seeds – autoflowering and feminized in the market. To know which of these is better for you, you have to know the basics of these cannabis seeds and their pros and cons.
What are feminized cannabis seeds?
Feminized seeds are bred using specific techniques to eliminate male chromosomes (because they would anyway be discarded at the flowering stage). Therefore, plants grown from these seeds would all be female only. For cultivation purposes, we need only the female plants. In the case of regular seeds, we need to wait for a while to see if the plant grows up to be male or female and then use the female plants for harvesting. When you buy feminized seeds, your process gets much simpler, because you know that all the cannabis plants that you grow are going to be female.
Pros and cons of feminized seeds
As we saw in the above explanation, all the plants that grow from these seeds are 100% female. Therefore, cultivation process and time taken is much quicker when you use these seeds. The downside to this is that seed brewers may use chemicals while breeding the female plants so that the seeds that they produce don’t have any hermaphroditic characteristics.
What are autoflowering cannabis seeds?
Though they are commonly mentioned as seeds, autoflowering are not seeds, in the real sense. They are a type of cannabis plant that will enter the flowering stage under all circumstances, irrespective of the stress, lighting condition, and seasonal changes. They can be easily grown outdoors and they produce quick harvests. It takes just about 10 weeks to get a harvest out of these seeds. The newest hybrid variety of seeds is the autoflowering feminized seeds, where seed breeders get female plants that enter into the flowering stage automatically. This way, they get the dual benefit of simple and quick cultivation process (no need to wait to identify the plant’s sex) and quick harvest (just about 10 weeks of waiting time).
Pros and cons of autoflowering seeds
The main advantage is that we can grow these plants outdoors very easily and get a quick harvest out of them. They are easy to maintain as they don’t need the same amount of care and effort that you provide for the regular seeds to flower. They are unaffected by the changes in the internal and external conditions and enter into the flower stage automatically. However, the major disadvantage is that they are very small in size. Due to this, the yield and the size of the cannabis strains that you get from these is very limited.
